Niagara Falls

Canadian Niagara Falls with mist

Geologists tell us Niagara Falls began around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the Ice Age with glacial melt-water flowing through the Niagara River.  They say natives settled in the Niagara region around 10,000 years ago.  Where the Falls occur on the Niagara River is a 90° bend in the river.  The natives named the Falls Onguierra which is translated “the neck” or “great throat” or “thunder of waters”.  By the time the first white man arrived and the onset of European settlers in the 1600s, the name evolved into “Niagara”.  It was a French catholic missionary priest, Fr. Louis Hennepin, that did the first written account of Niagara Falls in 1678.
